Why Google's Latest AI Search Updates Make Me Bullish on Google Ads

Google is updating AI Mode and AI Overviews to push people back out to the web, and that design choice tells you everything about where ads fit for the next five years.

Google is two companies in one: an AI company and a pay-per-click advertising company, meaning it gets paid every time someone clicks an ad. A massive chunk of its revenue comes from Google Ads. The way I see it, every AI feature Google ships will be designed to protect that revenue. That is why I predict Google Ads will keep working very well for the next five years, and why you need to be running them now.

What Google announced

Google announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews. AI Overviews is the AI-written summary that appears at the top of search results, and AI Mode is a chat style way of searching. The updates add clearer links and more context about sources, and Google framed the whole release as more ways to connect with the web from Search.

Read that detail carefully. Clearer links and source context mean Google wants people clicking out to websites. Clicks are the product Google sells, and this update keeps them flowing.

The business model protects the ads

Owners ask me whether AI summaries will make their ads invisible. My take is the opposite. If AI answered everything on the page and nobody clicked anything, Google would be shrinking its own business, and no company volunteers for that. So my bet is Google keeps designing its AI summaries in ways that keep Google Ads highly relevant, because the ads pay for everything else it builds.

This update fits that pattern. Google is adding more ways out to the web, which keeps the page commercial and keeps advertisers in the game.

What this means for your service business

When someone's water heater fails or a tooth starts aching, they search and they want to book someone today. Those searches carry commercial intent, meaning the person is ready to spend money right now. Ads sit at the top of exactly those searches, and I expect that to hold however the AI layer changes, because those clicks fund the whole machine.

In my experience running paid ads for service businesses as a Google and Meta Partner for over 10 years, every big Search redesign has come and gone while the ads kept producing booked jobs. We have managed accounts through multiple layout changes, and the accounts that stayed active kept winning.

Where I land on the next five years

I expect Google Ads to keep performing well for at least five more years, because Google will not ship an AI that starves its own ad business. If you run a clinic, a dental practice, or a trades company and you are not running Google Ads yet, start. Waiting to see how AI plays out just means your competitors build years of account data and conversion history while you build none, and catching up costs more than starting.

Google designed its AI to keep people clicking. I intend to keep buying those clicks, and so should you.
