My bet is simple: ads you can talk to will beat ads you can only click, and the service businesses that win will be the ones whose answers hold up in a back and forth.
If you own a clinic, a dental practice, or a trades company, this one deserves your attention. Search Engine Land, a trade publication that covers the search advertising industry, is reporting that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is turning ChatGPT ads into conversations. That headline is the story so far, and it is enough to plan around.
Why a talking ad is a different product
Today a Google ad works one way. Someone clicks, lands on your page, then fills a form or calls. A conversational ad can sit inside the chat itself, where the person is already asking questions.
The way I see it, that moves the qualifying step forward. I expect these formats to handle the basic questions before anyone ever reaches your website or your front desk. That is good news if your offer, your pricing logic, and your availability are clear. It is a real problem if your business depends on a salesperson smoothing over a vague offer on the phone.
The lead that arrives will be warmer, and pickier
In my experience managing paid ads for service businesses over the past decade, the gap between winners and losers shows up after the lead arrives, in how fast and how well the business responds. A conversational format raises that bar.
If a person has already had their basic questions answered inside a chat, the one who finally contacts you is closer to buying. They will also have less patience for a slow callback or a receptionist who cannot answer a pricing question. Speed to response has always decided who gets the job. I expect it to decide even more once the ad itself is doing part of the talking.
I predict Google and Meta answer fast
We have been a Google and Meta Partner for over 10 years, and neither platform gives up ad budget quietly. I predict both respond with more conversational and message based ad formats of their own, because they can see the same shift OpenAI sees.
For you as an owner, that is mostly good. More competition between platforms tends to produce better tools and more places to reach customers. It also means more noise, which is exactly why I would not move a dollar of budget on a headline alone.
What I would do with your budget right now
Keep your spend where you can trace a lead to a booked job or a booked appointment. Tighten the basics this quarter: a clear offer, honest answers to the questions your customers actually ask, and a fast response to every single inquiry. If ChatGPT ads open up for local service categories, the businesses with clean tracking and clear answers will be able to test them cheapest.
The Search Engine Land report is light on public detail for now, so I am not telling anyone to rip up their plan this week. I am telling you the direction, and the direction is ads that talk.
The next ad your customer sees might ask them a question. Make sure your business already knows its answers.
