How We Gave Every Team Member Access to 30+ AI Models in One Afternoon

We spun up a branded internal AI portal for the North Digital team in a single afternoon — and the ROI was immediate. Here's how we did it, why it matters, and what it means for building a truly AI-enabled agency.

A sleek branded internal AI portal

North Digital's internal AI portal — 30+ models, one login, built in an afternoon.

This past week, I spun up an internal AI portal for the North Digital team in a single afternoon. The stack: VPS → Docker → Open WebUI → OpenRouter → custom branding and a branded URL. Every team member now has access to 30+ of the top AI models through a single interface with one login.

It sounds simple — because it is. But the impact has been anything but small.

The Problem with AI Access at Most Companies

Here's something that surprised me: even after everything that's happened in AI over the past two years, some of our team members were still using free-tier AI plans. Not because they didn't want better tools — but because access, distribution, and ease of use inside a company is genuinely hard to get right.

When AI tools are scattered across different accounts, different logins, different price points — people default to whatever is easiest. And "easiest" often means the free version. That's a real cost, even if it doesn't show up on a balance sheet.

The problem isn't motivation. Most people on a modern agency team are curious about AI and want to use it well. The problem is friction. Friction kills adoption. And in most companies, the access layer for AI is full of it.

What We Built — and How Fast

The setup was straightforward. Here's the full stack:

  • A VPS (virtual private server) as the foundation
  • Docker to containerize everything cleanly
  • Open WebUI as the front-end interface
  • OpenRouter to route requests across 30+ AI models
  • Custom branding and a branded URL so it feels like ours

I built this myself, using Claude to walk me through every step. Total time: one afternoon. The result: a polished, branded AI portal that every team member can log into with a single set of credentials.

No IT department. No six-week procurement process. No enterprise software contract. Just a clear problem, the right tools, and an afternoon of focused work.

Why This Matters for AI Adoption

Ease of access is everything when it comes to internal AI adoption. If your team has to jump through hoops to use AI — different tools, different logins, different billing — most people won't bother. They'll stick with what they know.

But when you remove that friction? When AI is just... there, ready to use, with the best models available? People actually use it. And when people actually use it, you start building what I'd call internal AI wrappers — team-specific workflows, prompts, and habits that compound over time.

That compounding effect is the real prize. It's not about any single task being done faster. It's about your entire team gradually developing a fluency with AI that becomes a genuine competitive advantage. That only happens when the tools are accessible, consistent, and feel like a natural part of how work gets done.

The Ripple Effects

This wasn't just an internal productivity win. The ripple effects have been real — and they extend well beyond the team itself.

  • Clients notice. When your team is genuinely AI-enabled, it shows in the quality and speed of your work. Clients like working with an agency that's ahead of the curve — not one that's still figuring out which ChatGPT plan to use.
  • It attracts top talent. The best people want to work somewhere that takes AI seriously — not just as a buzzword, but as a real part of how work gets done. We're not just an agency; we're a truly AI-enabled agency.
  • It creates a positive feedback loop. Better tools → better work → better results → more confidence in AI → even better tools. Once that loop starts spinning, it's hard to stop.

There's also something less tangible but equally important: it signals to the team that leadership is invested in giving them the best possible environment to do great work. That matters for morale, retention, and the overall culture you're building.

The ROI Was Immediate

The ROI on this setup was great — and the best part is the cost is minimal compared to the value. One afternoon of setup. One login for the whole team. Access to the best AI models available. That's a hard deal to beat.

If you're running an agency or a team and you haven't thought seriously about how AI is actually distributed and accessed internally, this is worth your attention. The technology is the easy part. The culture and access layer is where most companies fall short — and where the biggest gains are hiding.

You don't need a massive budget or a dedicated engineering team to get this right. You need clarity on the problem, the right open-source tools, and the willingness to just build it.

Let's Talk

We're building North Digital to be a genuinely AI-enabled agency — not just in the tools we use, but in how we think, work, and deliver for clients. This internal portal is one piece of that. There are more.
